Unbeaten Braga pull ahead in Portuguese league

Matchday 6 of the Portuguese Elite Championship was played in Nazaré this Sunday

SC Braga’s biggest win so far in the campaign saw the three-time European champions build a three-point lead on Matchday 6.

The defending champions defeated São Domingos by ten goals to one to open up a cushion between them and second-place Casa Benfica in the Portuguese Elite Championship standings.

Casa Benfica were dragged to the penalty spot for the second time in as many weeks after a 2-2 draw in normal time against Varzim, but this time they held their nerve to nick a point at the death.

Sporting, national champions in 2020, continued to turn their initially poor form around by beating Leixões 4-2, while the local Nazaré club, ACD Sótão, were also taken to penalties by Buarcos, where the Figueira da Foz side held on for the point, and their third victory of the 2022 campaign.

The national league will take a break over the next three weeks as the teams eight teams compete in the Euro Winners Cup. The European club championships is to take place in Nazaré from 3-12 June.

Matchday 7 of the Portuguese league will be played on 16 June, where Braga will face Buarcos, while second and third go head to head when Casa Benfica take on Sporting. São Domingos will continue their quest for their first victory of the season against Leixões, and Varzim SC will take on ACD Sótão.
