“I like beach soccer,” says Wayne Forde. “I feel we have a very good chance of doing well on the international scene.”
Guyana Football Federation (GFF) president Wayne Forde is optimistic about the prospect of enjoying a successful run at beach soccer in the international arena over the coming months.
The CONCACAF nation will be among those looking to secure a place at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in the Bahamas next year, with competition for places among teams in the region set to be fierce as heavyweights and surprise packages battle it out to try ensure one of 16 places in the competition.
And Forde is confident the Guyana team can make the most of increased investment to succeed on the beach while also attracting interest off it in what remains relatively new territory for the GFF.
The president said: “We have a very good chance of doing well at beach soccer on the international stage.
“Talking to a lot of people that have looked at the Guyana team, they really believe we can go all the way and that’s why the federation is willing to make the investment with the coach and other requirements.”
Though the sport is still relatively new to Guyana, Forde added: “What I like about beach soccer is that it taps into a different market. It has an entertainment flair to it and if you really put the right thought behind it you can do a lot of things with it.”
