Mriya 2006 BSC and CFP Caceres clinch vital points on Matchday 1 in Nazare
Two incredibly tight battles lifted the curtain on the Women’s Euro Winners Cup, with Mriya 2006 from Ukraine and Spaniards CF Cáceres Femenino grabbing the first points at stake.
Not even a second was left on the stopwatch when Babenko fired home the penalty kick that gave Pachev’s side a key win over New Team BS. The Ukrainian team had seen their opponents equalise just seconds before, and it seemed that, after being ahead for most of the game, it was destined to go into extra time. But it didn’t.
One minute into the game, Vypasniak had swept the Ukrainian side ahead, but Ana Lucía Correia, with two goals, turned the score around by the beginning of second leg. Babenko, with her first goal of the day, and Portuguese Mariana Alves Rosa led the reaction for Pachev’s side.
At 3-2 ahead, Mriya seemed to be heading for their first win… But with less than one minute remaining, there was still room for the story to change.
In the other game of the day, CFP Caceres held on stubbornly to seal a tight 2-1 win over Marseille Beach Team to ensure an essential three points on the first day
Goals by Nerea Sánchez and Maria Herrero had the Spaniards swiftly commanding the game midway second frame, raining shot after shot on their opponents, but totally against the run of play, Tiphanie added some spice just three minutes into last period to threaten the Spanish lead.
Cáceres managed to hold off their French counterparts for the remaining time, securing a victory that gives them a an early advantage after the first matchday at the Women’s Euro Winners Cup Nazaré 2020.
