German Beach Soccer League nearing exciting finish to crown first ever Champion
In a finals match fit to bestow a Cup, the Beach Royals from Dusseldorf rightly earned that cup over rival Chemnitz with a 3-1 win in Krefeld, Germany. Only a match of this caliber could be for a Championship. Offense, defense, and drama were all on full display. Play was intense and spectacular from the outset. Weirauch of Chemnitz put his side up by one goal very quickly when he scored only a few seconds into the match.
The Royals striker Goto equalized the score few minutes later, laying the groundwork for an even more exiting final period. The third period could only be described as remarkable. A phenomonal volley by the Royals finally put them up by one after defense ruled the second period. The result remained in doubt until the waning minutes when the Royals hammered home one last goal to make it clear who the champion was. The great development and high quality of play in Germany is a testament to the rapid expansion of Beach Soccer all over the world.
Next weekend will also be another example of Beach Soccer´s growth in breadth and quality. Rostock/Warnemunde will be hosting the final stage, including playoffs and a championship, of the German Beach Soccer league. It is the first year for thise newly established and very competitive league. This will be the fifth venue to host a stage for the extremely exciting GBSL. There will be eight teams competing, all will play each other once before the playoffs and final, and the winner will earn the right to play in the Euro Winners Cup 2014. The German Cup Champions, Beach Royals Dusseldorf, and powerhouses BeachKick Berlin, Rostocker Robben, and Beachdiver Braunschweig all made it to the semifinals.
It was a shock though that Chemnitz and Ibbenburen did not escape the round robin stage. Despite those two teams falling short, they earned plenty of great exposure as the German National team has been using the previous four stages of this innagural league to scout players for the German team.
