Quarter-finals decided as 12 become eight in Rio

The last day of group stage action saw Brazilian teams top their groups as the quarter-final are decided

Clear victories for defending champions, Vasco da Gama, and Sampaio Correa saw the Brazilians top their groups, while Vitoria did the same, but only after a nervy penalty shootout against Uruguayans, Bella Vista, who slip to third position but still qualify.

In Group C, Monagas Dífalo may have had the group stage’s top scorer Edson Souza (who scored 11 goals – five more than anyone else!) but the Venezuelans finished the competition in fourth place. However, they still snatched a one-point victory in their last match, beating Argentine opponents, Acassuso, who finished in second place, despite the defeat, to claim a spot in the next round.

Next it was the turn of three Group B sides to scrap for the final spots in the quarters, and Hamacas won their first game to claim second place in the group, qualifying alongside Sampaio Correa, who put ten past Peruvians, Academia TiTO Drago, to top the group.

In Group A, the two already-qualified teams, La 25 Sport (Colombia) and Vasco da Gama (Brazil), played each other in the battle for the first-place finish. The Brazilians won by nine goals to two, as La 25 Sport took up second.

Puerta del Lago from Paraguay beat the Ecuadorians Delfín, 10-5, enough to claim the last place in the quarter-finals as one of the best third-place finishers. They will face tough opposition in the form of Copa do Brasil winners, Sampaio Correa, on Friday 30th.
