Morocco’s moment
Morocco beat USA 5-4.

The opening match of the day in the men’s competition was a tie between USA and Morocco.

The only goal of the first period arrived in the opening two seconds of the match, as El Biouri gave Morocco an early lead which they would take into the first interval.

Zouhair doubled the Moroccan advantage in the first few minutes of the second period, as Akol pulled one pack with less than three minutes remaining in the period. However, Morocco were extremely productive with the time left as they scored three more goals as Zahraoui captured a brace and El Kraichly converted.

Despite Morocco holding a four-goal advantage over the Americans heading into the third period, USA dominated the scoring in the final phase of play as Akol bagged his second, as goals also came from Perea and Franco. However, the three goals scored weren’t enough to take the match to extra-time and Morocco completed their second win of the competition.

Super Salvadorans
El Salvador win 4-3 against Switzerland.

With one match remaining in the men’s tournament, only Switzerland would have the chance to knock Morocco off top spot as they took on El Salvador.

The Swiss had a bright opening 12 minutes against the hosts, striking the back of the opposition net twice through Eliott and Knöpfli.

El Salvador brought the match level in the second period as Ruiz and Velasquez both hit the target in less than a minute between each other. However, Switzerland’s lead was restored with just over a minute to play in the period, courtesy of Hodel.

Ruiz would complete his hat-trick and the Salvadoran comeback in the third and final period of the match to give El Salvador their first win of the competition and denied the Swiss from catching Morocco at the top.

Individual awards
During the awards ceremony in Costa del Sol, three individual awards were given out to the men’s players. The ‘Best goalkeeper’ award was given to Moroccan goalkeeper, Yassir Abada, the ‘MVP’ award was handed to Morocco player, Reda Zahraoui and the ‘Top scorer’ award was won by El Salvador’s, José Agustín Ruiz.
