The world’s best player was commemorated by his hometown with the renaming of the beach soccer stadium
One of the most well-known beach soccer arenas took on the name of local player Jordan Santos, currently the best player in the world, on Tuesday.
The Mayor of Nazaré, Walter Chicharro, who always plays such an active role in the preparation and execution of beach soccer competitions in the Portuguese town, had this to say on the local hero…
“Jordan was chosen as the best beach soccer player in the world in 2019, just days before winning the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup with the national team, and he is the first Nazarene athlete in this sport to obtain such a distinction.”
Jordan was born on July 2 1991 in Canada. He came to Portugal at just three months old and at the age of five he moved to Nazaré to live with his mother and maternal grandmother. It was on the beach of the town that one of the most prolific careers in beach soccer began.
Since then, he has toned his skills over the years, travelling the world playing beach soccer but regularly returning to play on the same sands he did as a child.
His status culminated last year in being awarded the Best Player of the Year trophy at the Beach Soccer Stars gala in Dubai, but 2019 saw Jordan with four major trophies for his club and another four for his country.
With SC Braga he won the Mundialito de Clubes Moscow and the Euro Winners Cup (in Nazaré), as well as the national championship and the Portuguese Cup.
For the national team, he won a gold medal at the European Games in Minsk, the Mundialito (also held in Nazaré), and became European champion in Figueira da Foz, where he was voted best player of the tournament.
On top of all that, after being voted the best in the world, his year came to an incredible climax with the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup title in Paraguay, where Jordan scored three goals in to final to help Portugal defeat Italy 6-4.
An amazing season. An amazing stadium. An amazing player.
