German powerhouses to battle for Cup

National League excitement continues though the chase for the German Cup will come to an end in Krefeld on July 27th with one team crowned champion

This weekend Krefeld will host the fifth group stage of the German Beach Soccer League but the city will also going be hosting the final of the League Cup. Chemnitz and Ibbenbüren will fight each other for the first title of the German beach soccer season.

Chemnitz has set pace in the league table by playing in stunning fashion all season, and they have emerged as the odds-on favourites to with the Cup as well. Chemnitz defeated GWS Beach Pirates in the semi-final this year and now they have the chance to avenge last year’s loss in the Cup finale against Beach Royals Düsseldorf. National team goalkeeper Sascha Penke, who was recently chosen as the best goalkeeper of the Euro Beach Soccer League event in Catania, and Sascha Weirauch, MVP of the Euro Nations Cup in Austria last weekend, are the key players on the Chemnitz squad.

On the other side, The Lords of the Ball, from Ibbenbüren, are highlighted by National team players Sebastian Ulrich, and the prolific goal scorer Christian Biermann. Currently ranked third in the GBSL, Ibbenbüren made their way into the final by beating none other than former league champions Rostocker Robben and the strong team from Braunschweig. The league game between Ibbenbüren and Chemnitz ended 0-4 for the Saxonian side. Ibbenbüren will look to take revenge on Chemnitz in the cup final.

As the German Beach Soccer League comes to the last group stage, the situation is just as thrilling as ever. Chemnitz, Rostock, and Ibbenbüren have already qualified for the playoffs, though there are still three teams battling for the last spot in the semi-finals. Braunschweig, Berlin, and Düsseldorf will put their nose to the grindstone teeth to keep the hope alive for the league title.
