Vasco da Gama edge Botafogo in one of the traditional Brazilian battles as Campeonato Brasileiro de Clubes pulls its curtains
The “classico” facing Vasco da Gama and Botafogo became the most outstanding game of this opening matchday of the Campeonato Brasileiro de Clubes.
The vascaínos, champions of the Mundialito de Clubes in 2011 and with a significant part of the Brazilian National Team in their ranks, were terribly inspired today, and despite the amount of talent Botafogo tresures, there was little for them to do on the Santos arena today… The goals by Bokinha, Mauricinho, Rafinha, Jordan and Antônio were too much to cope with for the alvinegros.
In the previous game, the Copa de Brasil 2016 champions, Sampaio Correia, opened their spell in this Campeonato Brasileiro de Clubes edging 4-2 Rio Branco. Two goals by Eudim, and the ones bagged by Andrezinho and André Bigode had the Maranhenses prevailing over the capixabas.
Fluminense, semifinalists of the last Mundialito de Clubes bagged three points, too, thanks to a 8-5 win over Avaí, as Sport Recife bent Gremio Porto Alegre to equal Sampaio Correia at the top of the table in Group B.
The action goes on tomorrow at the Praia do Gonzaga in Santos, with the eight teams fighting for the brazilian crown and the last remaining ticket for the Copa Libertadores.
