The competition features both men and women's divisions and kicks off this Saturday
The Salvadoran Liga de Fútbol Playa – Copa CEL 2022 gets underway this Saturday with the first matchday of the competition. 18 teams in the men’s division, and 12 in the women’s, will take part in this year’s championship, which will last until the end of August, where the finals will take place.
Organised by INDES, Salvador’s Liga de Fúbol Playa will consist of a regular phase (between 19 March and 31 July) with different venues across the country. Knock-out stages will follow, with quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the final will be played on 28 August.
The 18 sides of the men’s competition are: Barra de Santiago, UES, El Tamarindo, San Marcelino, Rayos del Bajo Lempa, Barra Ciega, Puerto El Triunfo, Isla de Méndez, El Espino, Apulo Ilopango, Costa del Sol, La Canoa del Bajo Lempa, Chirilagua, La Pirraya, Rancho Viejo, Warriors SV, Garita Palmera and San Sebastián.
And these teams will appear in the women’s division: Barra de Santiago, UES, El Tamarindo, San Marcelino, Rayos del Bajo Lempa, Puerto El Triunfo, Isla de Méndez, El Espino, Corral de Mulas, Apulo Ilopango, Costa del Sol and La Canoa del Bajo Lempa.
La Pirraya (men) and Chirilagua (Women), who took home the national crown in the first edition of the Liga de Fútbol Playa are still among the favourites, but the competition will be fierce.
The president ad honórem of the Instituto Nacional de los Deportes de El Salvador (INDES), Yamil Bukele, expressed his gratitude to the organisers, and support to the participating teams: “We have done our best to ensure that this event is even better than last year’s, both at playing and organisational levels, because we know the expectations from the teams and their strong will to perform at their best”, he said.
