This same day, 21 years ago, the Verdeamarela won the first ever Beach Soccer World Championships
Brazil are indisputably the fathers of these sport. They are also the team that have collected the biggest tally of honours in the history of our sport, and that began happening pretty early…
Soon after the sport was made official, the Verdeamarela claimed their first global throne, after beating USA 8-1 in the final of the first Beach Soccer World Championships, held in Copacabana. It was 21 years ago, 1995, and the Brazilians already showed the world who was the ones to beat on the sand.
That day, the Verdeamarela not only became the first World Champions but they also earned some individual awards that went to the hands of true beach soccer legends: Junior and Zico shared the MVP award, with the latter also achieving the Top-scorer award, together with Italian giant Altobelli. Paulo Sergio, in turn, was named best goalkeeper of the event.
In the game for the third place, England edged Italy on extra time (7-6).
