The world champions overtake Brazil to take top spot in the official ranking
The ball might not be rolling in the world of beach soccer for the moment, but there are still some major events taking place.
Despite the lack of competitions over the past weeks, Portugal have overtaken Brazil in the Overall World Ranking to sit atop the table again. The nature of the points system keeps the Overall BSWW Rankings dynamic, alive and constantly evolving.
It is worth remembering that, just as the FIFA Coca-Cola Ranking and the ATP Ranking, for example, the ranking gives a higher importance to the events played in the most recent months.
This is why today, and for the second time since 2017, when they were dethroned by Brazil, Portugal become the leader of the Official World Ranking, a position which only two other teams (Brazil and Russia) have occupied.
The BSWW World Ranking takes into account the last four years, giving most weight to the most recent. The current ranking goes from today back to April 2016, in order to reflect a clearer, more up to date, reality of the sport. The period of assessment gradually decreases in terms of points weighting. Thus, the value of each year is 25% lower than the previous one.
