The South African Football Association’s top man enjoyed the Power Horse Beach Soccer African Trophy Durban 2015 from March 6th-8th
Action was abundant in this inaugural event and the General Secretary, Dennis Mumble, was more than pleased with what he witnessed. The sport is easy to love and he found the fast-pace, slew of goals, physical play, and rapid action, all very fun and entertaining. It was the perfect event to attend as every match had people on the edge of their seats, including from the opening whistle, as the first match of the weekend was Morocco vs the Ivory Coast, which went into penalty kicks; won by the Cote d’Ivoire 4(1) – 4(3). When the final whistle had blown, Senegal was the team that had traversed all obstacles to earn the Trophy.
In addition to all the excitement on the pitch, the General Secretary met with BSWW Executive Vice-President, Joan Cusco to discuss the sport. The discussions were very productive and delved into the topics of the current state of the sport in South Africa as well as the bright future that is quickly becoming a reality for many African nations. Dennis Mumble also talked about how he truly believes that Beach Soccer has great potential in the region and that the South African FA will work extremely hard to develop a beach soccer program in the country, including a stable national league.
SAFA’s General Secretary also had one last stop on his Durban Beach Soccer tour; it was to greet the National Selection of South Africa. The team was thrilled and rode the energy to a quality 4th place finish, impressing the General Secretary himself. Dennis Mumble told the team, “We believe in the sport, and we will be backing it with all of our support and structure, because we want the South African team to earn its’ place among the beach soccer greats, and we believe it has the ability to deservedly do so. We want the team to be one of the most important teams in Africa.” The road is clear and all parties are on the right track for beach soccer expansion in South Africa.
