Americas Winners Cup: Day 2

FBS and Santa Cruz stay top of their groups, while FBS took a hard-fought point against Flamengo

The Estádio Nacional Costa del Sol witnessed some intense and exciting matchups on Matchday 2 of the Americas Winners Cup, with Santa Cruz and Barra de Santiago cementing the first place of their respective groups.

FBS beat Flamengo on penalties

With many international players on both sides, the clash between FBS and Flamengo lived up to the expectations as fans did enjoy a well-fought encounter.

Eduardo Lopez gave FBS the lead in the first period, and Flamengo responded through Giovane converting a penalty in the second period. Felipinho confirmed Flamengo’s overtake on the scoreboard but a penalty scored by Antonio Chavez, with less than two minutes to play, took the game to extra-time.

Pedrinho gave Flamengo the lead again, but ten seconds later, Rezende struck it home to take the decision to the penalty shoot-out.

Bahamas’s international Michael Butler showed all his quality saving three penalties, while Martin Grimson found the back of the net in the decisive penalty to earn FBS an important point.

Chiquillo nets hat-trick in edgy clash

In one of the most entertaining matches of the day, Santa Cruz BS defeated Garita Palmera BS six goals to five.

The North-Americans went into the second period losing 2-0, but turned the game around with five consecutive goals in less than seven minutes.

The locals still managed to cut the distance to only one goal, but Chiquillo’s third goal made it 6-4. Rizo would reignite Garita Palmera’s hopes with only 12 seconds to go, but it was already too late for the team from El Salvador.

Authoritarian debut for La Pirraya

The top seed in group A couldn’t have had a worse start as they conceded three seconds into the game, with Billy scoring for Turquoise, but the locals reacted soon enough and finished the first period winning 4-1.

The comfortable lead was extended in the second period, allowing La Pirraya to control a third period were there was only a goal by Billy, for the match to end 7-3 to the team from El Salvador.

Barra cruise past Pioneros

The first 35 seconds of the game were a sample of the whole match, with local side Barra de Santiago scoring two quick goals.

The Guatemalans could only stop the bleeding at the end of the second period when they were already 7-0 down, with a goal by Crocker, who would score again in the third period, not before Velasquez signed his hat-trick in Barra’s 8-2 win.
