Round 2 of matches at the Women's Euro Winners Cup provided unexpected results as teams strengthen their group position
A 2-3 defeat against newcomers Recreativo de Huelva was most probably not what defending champions Mriya 2006 were expecting in their first game in the 2021 edition of the Women’s Euro Winners Cup. But the mighty Spaniards were impossible to beat today and their spirit and endless energy reserves rewarded them with a prestigious win, one which helps them stay in the fight for semi-final places.
Talking of surprises, Lokrians suffered a second upset in as many days against one of the debutants in the competition: another Spanish side Terrassa, who stunned the World Winners champions from the penalty spot, after the game ended 5-5 with braces from Adriana from the Catalan side and Ferrara for the Italian. This defeat sinks Lokrians to the bottom of the table in Group A, a group brilliantly commanded by AD Roquetas, who won big against hosts Os Nazarenos (1-7) with a hat-trick by England international Wendy Martin.
In Group C, a gap is forming between two groups as the three top ranked sides bag more points in the competition. It was not easy for WFC Zvezda, though, at they needed to combat a defiant Domino’s until the very last breath to end up prevailing for their second win. It was far from easy for 2019 champions Playas de San Javier either, as Red Devils Ladies proved a very uncomfortable opponent.
Only the extra firepower of the La Roja stars Carmen Fresneda (two more goals today) and Sara Rui, unbalanced things for Joaquín Castaño’s side. More Spaniards, Higicontrol Melilla, bagged a much more comfortable win with England international Molly Clark starring with four goals in a 7-0 win over AD Pasteis.
More thrilling battles will define things further in these tight groups, where only the best-ranked side in each, plus the best second-ranked team, will progress into the semi-finals. Get ready for yet another breathtaking matchday tomorrow!
