Paraguay, Brazil and Venezuela bag 3 points at Copa America

The first round of the South American showdown took place in Paraguay on Saturday


Defending champions Brazil, hosts Paraguay and Venezuela took three points on Day 1 of the Copa America, while Colombia took a single point from the penalty spot against Argentina.

Ecuador and Uruguay had a rest day on Matchday 1, and will play Chile and Peru on Sunday.

The Estadio Mundialista Los Pynandi in Asunción, Paraguay, hosted the first round of the CONMEBOL Copa América de Fútbol Playa on Saturday 21 May.

In Group A, Colombia and Argentina ended the three periods of normal time at a 2-2 stalemate, and Los Cafeteros came out on top from nine metres. Paraguay then narrowly downed Chile by two goals to one.

In Group B, Brazil, under new coach Marco Octavio, put five past Peru to kick off their campaign to make it three consecutive continental titles, and Venezuela defeated Bolivia by four goals to two.

Sunday will see Uruguay and Chile join the fray, Brazil will face Venezuela and Colombia will face Paraguay. Argentina and Bolivia will enjoy a rest day on Matchday 2.

The top two teams of each group will advance to the semi-finals. The teams finishing in third to fifth will proceed to play in placement matches against the teams finishing in the same position in the other group to define the fifth place, the seventh place and the ninth place in the final ranking of the competition.
