Beach Soccer returns to the Portuguese coast as Europe’s biggest club showpiece is just a matter of hours away
The streets of the seaside town of Nazaré are awash with familiar faces; players, coaches, fans and of course all the people working hard to prepare the awesome stadium ready for the continent’s biggest club competition, the Euro Winners Cup.
But first, 24 teams will face off in the Euro Winners Challenge, as eight of them hope to join the teams already qualified to contest the main prize.
In 2018, BSC Kristall (RUS) won the Euro Winners Challenge (previously known as the Nazaré Beach Soccer Cup) to make the Euro Winners Cup and they battled all the way to the final, painfully missing out to local side SC Braga after a nail-biting penalty shootout.
This year the event sees participation grow yet again, with a record breaking 82 teams of both men and women (from 25 different countries!) flooding into Nazaré.
From Friday to Sunday, the Euro Winners Challenge will decide who will join the big boys in the Euro Winners Cup, which starts on June 2nd. The final of both the men’s and women’s competitions will be fought on Sunday 9th June.
Can Kristall go one step further this year? Will Braga retain the trophy on home sand? Or will a new European champion be crowned?
