Group A and Group B come to a close in Pattaya

Teams continued to battle for places in the knockout stage


Group A
Lebanon claimed a place in the quarter-finals, defeating India 6-1 in Pattaya. The opening goal of the match came courtesy of Al Saleh as he converted swiftly from the penalty spot. Haidar doubled Lebanon’s lead, as Al Zein, Ossman, Choker and Merhi scored the remaining goals for the nation.

It was host nation Thailand who would finish in top spot in Group A, beating Kuwait 4-3 in their final group game during extra time. The Thais found themselves 3-0 up in the fixture, before Kuwait netted three of their own to take the match to an additional three minutes, but Suriya was the player to have the final say in the fixture as he blasted home the winner for Thailand.

Group B
Saudi Arabia guaranteed themselves a top two finish in Group B to book their place in the last eight, with a 3-2 win against Iraq. Saudi Arabia broke the deadlock in the closing minute of the first period, with Majed converting from a free kick. Iran brought themselves back on level terms on two occasions in the match, before Al Youbi and Al Hamami combined for Saudi Arabia’s third.

Following back-to-back wins in Group B, Japan ensured they finished on maximum points in the group stage by defeating China PR 4-1. It took until the second period of the match for the first goal to come, as Oba’s acrobatic strike rippled the back of China’s net. Matsumoto netted a brace in fixture, as goalkeeper Kawai scored Japan’s fourth goal of the match.
