GREP-ESC Gyongyos retain Hungarian league title

Hungarian league was clinched in a dramatic extra time comeback, as GREP-ESC Gyongyos were crowned for a second year running

The MLSZ Beach Arena in Siofok, Nagystrandon, was the venue for the Hungarian National Beach Soccer League final…and what a final it was!

If the defending champions, GREP-ESC Gyongyos, wanted to claim a second consecutive Hungarian league title, they had the difficult task of getting past a star-studded Jaszfenyszaru GWP CSERVY first.

Cservenyak Adam’s side had the three Spaniards Adrian Frutos and Javier and Christian Torres, in the ranks to call upon in the challengers’ bid for the crown.

It looked like the firepower would be enough as two Adri Frutos goals gave Jaszfenyszaru the lead, were it not for a spirited comeback by the defending champions. GREP-ESC Gyongyos just managed to snatch an equalizer, forcing the game to extra time, and then, cruelly snatching the victory away from the eight-time title winners.

A 4-3 extra time score, secured a title-defending win for GREP-ESC Gyongyos, while Bonyhad BFC and Bodon Peter FC finished in third and fourth place, following the third-place play off which finished 10-4.

The individual awards were were voted for by the participating teams (except Top Scorer), and were awarded as follows:

Best Player of the Season: Voitenko Dmytro (Bodon Peter FC)

Best Goalkeeper of the Season: Szacsko László (Jaszfenyszaru GWP Cservy)

Top Scorer of the Season: Rutai Balazs (FC Junior Sport) – with 35 scored goals

Additional Awards:

Best Referee of the Season: Foris Renata

Fair Play award: Bonyhad BFC (fewest cards of the season)

Elsewhere on the sand, the GREP-ESC Gyongyos volleyball team also repeated last year’s success with a championship title on the same day. It seems that this team really know their beach sports!

Congratulation to the Hungarian champs!
