ROUND OF 16
AIS Playas de San Javier 5 – 4 WFC Zvedza
WFC Zvezda were on the wrong end of one of the day’s six results which finished 5-4, as England’s Sarah Kempson netted a double to take Playas de San Javier into the quarter final where they will face Swedish club Djurgardens IF FF.
Gorshkova scored a hat-trick for the Russians but another of the Three Lionesses, Gemma Hillier, scored the goal that proved decisive.
As a result of the Spanish side’s victory, the Euro Winners Cup is guaranteed to see a new winner lift the trophy in 2019.
Djurgardens IF FF 5 – 4 BSC Havana Shots Aargau
In the day’s first Round of 16 showdown, Havana Shots looked to take a step closer to repeating the heroics of 2017 when they claimed the European title, with victory today.
Djurgardens IF FF stood in their way though, and the Swedish side took a two-goal lead in the opening period to put the Swiss on the backfoot.
Havana Shots got back into it with three second-period goals but still trailed going into the final period, where they couldn’t catch up with their rivals in time, losing by a single goal to exit the competition.
ASD Lady Terracina 4 – 5 Madrid FF
The Madrilleños became the second team to reach the quarter-finals, but they spent much of the match trailing to their Italian rivals.
Mellado completed her brace in the third and final period as Lady Terracina lost the grip that they had maintained throughout the match.
With the victory in the bag, the Spanish side just made the cut by a single goal and they now awaited the results of other matches in the Round of 16 to see who they would meet on Friday.
Stade De Reims 5 – 4 Fundaciò Terrassa FC
Dealing an early upset to the reigning champions when they beat WFC Zvezda in their opening match, the new-comers Stade de Reims had laid a bold claim to success in the Euro Winners Cup.
They took an initial lead, as the first period finished at 2-1, but in the second, Fundaciò Terrassa came back to level the score.
In the third stage, the French found that extra gear, and Gomes netted her second to win the match and send Stade de Reims into the quarter-finals.
Lokrians BC 5 – 4 CFP Caceres Femenino
In a string of tantalizingly close Round of 16 matches in the women’s competition, all of which ended 5-4 or 4-5, Lokrians of Italy just managed to force a late winner to make the final eight.
Barboza had bagged herself a hat-trick by the match’s midway point, but CFP Caceres Femenino matched Lokrians goal for goal right until two minutes before the whistle.
It was then that Diadato struck late to nudge the Italians ahead, and they rode the wave of late Spanish attacks to confirm the win.
Lady Grembach Lodz 2 – 1 Marseille Beach Team
Last year’s fifth-place finishers were yet to lose in their 2019 Euro Winners Cup campaign so far, and although they managed to extend that into the quarter-finals, Marseille did not make it easy.
With one of the best three players in the world in their ranks, keeping Lady Grembach out was no mean feat, and it was Adriele who got them off the mark in the first period.
Borowiec claimed a second before the first whistle and just two goals turned out to be enough to sink Marseille, who just managed one late goal in response.
Another French side, Stade De Reims, will be their next test in the Euro Winners campaign.
Roses Platja 4 – 2 ACD O Sotao
The Catalans faced a local Nazaré side with big ambitions of Euro Winners success on home sand.
But two doubles from Chivi and Judith put Roses Platja well in control of the tie. ACD O Sotao did manage to find the net twice but they were knocked out of the tournament by a superior Spanish side.
A win against Lokrians BC in the quarter-final fixture tomorrow is now the still-unbeaten Roses’ next objective.
CD Higicontrol Melilla 2 – 4 BSC Terracina Femmenile
After finishing last year’s edition of the Euro Winners Cup in tenth, CD Higicontrol Melilla looked to better this with a spot in the quarters.
Their Italian opponents had similar ambitions and a fiercely fought tie saw extra time forced as Maria Soto netted twice for the Spaniards.
A goal for Simonetti and a second for Martinovic in extra time seize the place in the quarters for Terracina, and already awaiting them in the quarter-finals are Madrid FF, who defeated Lady Terracina earlier in the day.
AIS Playas de San Javier 5 – 4 WFC Zvedza
The defending champions of the Euro Winners Cup were knocked out by an English-boosted AIS Playas de San Javier in the Round of 16.
WFC Zvezda were on the wrong end of yet another of the day’s 5-4 results, as England’s Sarah Kempson netted a double to take Playas de San Javier into the quarter final where they will face Swedish club Djurgardens IF FF.
Gorshkova scored a hat-trick for the Russians but another English lady, Gemma Hillier, scored the goal that proved decisive.
As a result of the Spanish side’s victory, the Euro Winners Cup is guaranteed to see a new winner lift the trophy in 2019.
PLAY-OFFS (17th-20th place)
After being unable to pick up points in the group stages and exiting the Euro Winners Cup, the eliminated teams had the chance to end their spell in Nazaré with victory in their play-off group and finishing 17th.
The first match saw BS Zeeland hit ten against the competition’s youngest team, Nõmme Kalju of Estonia, who just managed to find the net twice.
Later on, BS DTS Ede went level on points with their fellow Dutch side by beating Red Devils Ladies by six goals to three.
