Braga beat Sporting to remain top in Portugal

Casa Benfica also win to stay level with the reigning Portuguese Elite champions

Matchday 9 of the Elite Championship in Portugal saw both leaders, Casa Benfica de Loures and SC Braga win to stay level on 22 points.

SC Braga recovered from their shock loss to Varzim last week with a victory over the 2020 league winners, Sporting. They remain in first position according to goal difference.

Daniel Zidane’s Casa Benfica scored nine against bottom place São Domingos to keep the pressure on Braga, who they defeated in the final of the Euro Winners Cup less than a month ago. Varzim jumped above Sporting into third with a 4-2 victory over Buarcos, building on their historic win over Braga on Matchday 8.

Sporting drop into fourth, while Buarcos stay in fifth after their loss. The Nazaré hosts ACD Sótão were downed by Leixões and currently in sixth as both sides now have nine points.

Matchday 10 of the Portuguese league will be played on 9 July in Porto, after an international break will see Portugal kick off their Euro Beach Soccer League campaign in Nazaré.
