The Russian came back to beat NorCal BSC in extra time
While the finalists rested on matchday 6 in Alanya, the third-place in the World Winners Cup was being contested.
NorCal BS (USA) started on the front foot, leading for most of the game but ultimately fell to two quality strikes in extra time, and take fourth in the first ever World Winners Cup.
WFC Zvezda (RUS) 4-2 NorCal BS (USA)
After missing out from the penalty spot against Lady Grembach yesterday, the winners of the Russian league were desperate to bag a top three finish.
But it was the Americans who drew first blood, as Quigley nodded in a corner from close range in the opening period. However, a rocket from Zvezda keeper, Akylbaeva, drew them level before the first whistle sounded.
Both sides were determined not to concede another in such a low-scoring and tight game, but after enjoying the majority of the attacking chances, the NorCal went ahead again when Hall muscled off her defender to smash in number two.
As the match drew on it looked as if the win was in the bag for the Californians but Zaitseva struck to equalise with just a minute to go.
After trailing for most of the match, the Russians completed the comeback clinically in extra time, as Cherniakova hit two brilliant goals in the space of a minute to deny NorCal the third-place finish.
All attention now turns to the World Winners Cup final, which will be played on Sunday between Pavia Lokrians (ITA) and Lady Grembach Lodz (POL).
