Spain win 8-7 against USA after extra-time.
The teams were level at the end of the first period as Chiky Ardil struck twice for the Spaniards, while Chavez and Akol found the net for the USA team. The second phase of play saw the American side take control as Chavez completed his brace and Carvalho, Valcarcel and Navas hit the back of the opposition net, with Ramy scoring Spain’s only goal of the period. Spain had a third period to remember as a double from Chiky Ardil and a finish with one second play meant the match would see extra-time. Jose Oliver and Kuman fired home for the Spanish side in the additional three-minute period, as Carvalho scored a consolation for USA, meaning Spain completed the comeback to secure two points.
Colombia win 5-4 against Mexico.
Defending champions Colombia faced host nation Mexico in the second match of the men’s competition, as the Colombian side went into the first interval with a 2-0 lead after goals from Esleider and Wilmar. The hosts reduced the deficit in the second period as Alejandro García and Ramón Maldonado scored but Pantoja also found the net, meaning Colombia led 3-2 with one period to play. Despite Mexico striking twice in the third period through Daniel Guzmán and Enoch López, the Colombians saw out an opening day win as Esleider netted his second and Juan hit home.
