The Copa do Brasil champions crowned on Saturday as Bruno Xavier stars for Sampaio Corrêa
Bruno Xavier scored four of the seven goals that Sampaio Corrêa scored to sink Vitória-BA, who could only manage two in response, and assume second place.
The Copa do Brasil has new champions, as the star-studded Sampaio Corrêa dominated on the sand of the Parque Olímpico da Barra this Saturday.
As well as the four goals from Bruno Xavier, three others were scored by Datinha, Serginho and Zé Lucas, with Nelito and Reyder pulling two back for the Bahians.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be a champion and help my team with four goals.” commented Bruno Xavier after the match.
“We will celebrate winning this title, but from tomorrow we will start thinking about the Libertadores game next week. We do not want to stop here.”
Vasco defeated Botafogo 4-1 in the third place play-off. Vasco da Gama (current Libertadores champions), Sampaio Corrêa-MA (as champions of the Copa do Brasil) and Vitória-BA (Copa do Brasil runners-up). secured a place in the Libertadores competition to be played next week.
As well as winning the title, Sampaio Corrêa also dominated the individual awards, with the Brazil nation side player, Filipe, claiming both the MVP, as well as the prize for Top Scorer. Teammate Jefinho took home the trophy for Best Goalkeeper.
