Four become two in race for Copa do Brasil title as Sampaio Corrêa and Vitória both win on penalties
Reigning champions Botafogo were knocked out of the Copa do Brasil on penalties by Vitoria, who will play against Sampaio Corrêa in the final.
The decoding match will take place this Saturday at 11:30 am local time, at Rio’s Parque Olímpico da Barra da Tijuca.
In the day’s first semi-final matchup, Sampaio Corrêa drew with Botafogo 5-5 in normal time and the victors were decided from the penalty spot. Sampaio Corrêa held their nerve to secure a place in the final round, winning on penalties by four goals to three.
Goalkeeper Jefinho commented after the match, “I’m very happy to be able to help the team with my performance. Now let’s rest for this Saturday’s final because it was a real battle against Botafogo.”
The other semi-final was also decided on penalties. Vitoria and Vasco da Gama were tied at 4-4, until the aptly named Vitoria also took a point from spot-kicks, winning by three penalties to two.
“We knew it would be a tricky game, but we fought until the end and we were rewarded with a place in the final. Now we need to study Sampaio Corrêa and set our focus on the title, “said captain Anderson.
The final between Sampaio Corrêa and Vitória will be broadcast on SporTV.
