Rui Coimbra out for the 2021 season

The Portugal defender announced he will miss the rest of the season on Friday

Rui Coimbra has revealed that he will be out for the remainder of the 2021 season following a tragic injury suffered in June.

The defender was stretchered off against Azerbaijan in the European Qualifier on 25 June, but there had been little news on his condition since the incident. It was announced today, though, that he suffered a serious injury to his cruciate ligament and will miss the rest of the season.

Today’s revelation means that Coimbra’s club Sporting CP will compete in the Euro Winners Cup, which begins on Monday, without him for the first time in years, and for Mario Narciso it means playing the EBSL Superfinal and, most devastatingly of all, the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup without one of his star players.

On his Instagram account, Coimbra thanked his followers for their continued support and commented, “I remain focussed on my recovery and will do my best to come back stronger. Injuries are a part of life as a highly-competitive athlete and it is just another obstacle to overcome.”

We wish him a speedy recovery.
