9th-12th place play-offs
Türkiye to compete for 9th place
Türkiye defeat Germany 5-4 on penalties.
Germany and Türkiye began proceedings in the 9th-12th place play-offs. It was Türkiye who came out on top in the fixture after winning 5-4 on penalties, following a 4-4 draw after extra time. Emrah scored two for Türkiye as Yasin and Ismail also hit the back of the net for the nation leading up to the shootout. Serkan saved the decisive penalty, earning his country a place in the 9th/10th place play-off. For their opponents, Germany, they will compete in the 11th/12th place play-off in Baku.
Estonia excel in extra time
Estonia beat Poland 5-4 after extra time.
Estonia and Poland next battled it out for a spot in the 9th-10th place play-off, competing in the second 9th-12th place play-off match of the day. Estonia won the match 5-4 after extra time, with Stüf, Lepik, Rump, Anissimov and Marmor finding the target, securing their place in the 9th-10th place play-off fixture against Türkiye, whereas their opponents, Poland will face Germany in the 11th/12th place play-off.
13th-16th place play-offs
A late victory for Switzerland
Switzerland win 6-5 against Greece after extra time.
In the first 13th-16th place play-off of the day, Switzerland faced Greece. Switzerland came away with a 6-5 triumph over their opponents in extra time, as Steinemann and Spacca’s braces as well as goals from Caldas and Eliott made the difference between the two nations in the encounter. After their victory, the Swiss will now play in the 13th/14th place play-off, whilst Greece will play in the 15th/16th place play-off.
Azerbaijan victorious on home soil
Azerbaijan overcome Lithuania 3-2.
To conclude the first day of play-off matches, hosts, Azerbaijan took on Lithuania in the final 13th-16th place play-off match. Azerbaijan took the 3-2 victory win in front of the home support, as Orkhan, Ramil and Elshad all fired home for the nation. Due to this result, Azerbaijan will participate in the 13th/14th place play-off against Switzerland, and Lithuania will play Greece in the 15th/16th place play-off.
