Mozambique shock Egypt on Day 1 in Senegal

There were also wins for hosts Senegal and Morocco on Sunday

Sunday 23 May saw drama and shock wins in the opening matches of CAF’s Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations in Saly, Senegal.

The first game resulted in a surprise win for Mozambique against Egypt, as they netted seven against the hosts of the last edition in 2018, winning the 12-goal thriller to start their campaign in impressive style.

The Pharaohs have finished third in the last two editions of the Beach Soccer AFCON, and will be desperate to win their next match against Seychelles on Tuesday to keep hopes of a World Cup seeding alive.

Seychelles suffered a 5-1 defeat to Morocco in their first match, meaning that they will go into Tuesday’s match-up level on zero points with their Egyptian rivals on Tuesday. Mozambique and Morocco currently lead Group B on three points each.

In Group A, Senegal kicked off the campaign to defend their continental tile with a 5-1 win over Uganda to go top of Group A, and will face Tanzania in their next match, which will take place on Wednesday.

The 2021 edition of the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations began on Sunday 23 and will run until Saturday 29 May. The two teams representing Africa at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Russia will be decided on Friday 28 May when the semi-finals decide the two finalists.
