Morocco, Senegal and Uganda join Mozambique in AFCON semis

The hosts and reigning champions Senegal defeated Tanzania in their last group game

Senegal remain undefeated in CAF’s Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations, as their victory on Wednesday sealed passage both for them and Uganda from Group A.

Three goals were enough for them to down Tanzania, who just scored one in response, and the Lions of Teranga top Group A after winning both games.

In Group B, a replay of the last two third-place playoffs resulted in Morocco finally overcoming their North African rivals, Egypt, to snatch the other place in the semi-finals, after the Mambas of Mozambique provided the story of the tournament so far by topping the group.

Egypt netted first and the Moroccans kept pace and the score was 3-3 with five minutes to play. However, Driss Ghannam bagged the winner to send the Atlas Lions through to the knockout stages where the face Africa’s top team, Senegal.

The loss for the Pharaohs means that they fail to make the semi-finals for the first time since 2015 and are out of the running for a place at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

The final four will return to the sand on Friday where Senegal look to take the next step towards defending their continental crown when the face Morocco, who are just one win away from reaching their first ever FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup.

Incredibly, Mozambique are in the same situation, and if they beat first-timers Uganda on Friday, they will have their tickets to Moscow secured, and a place in the final of the Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations.

The 2021 edition of the CAF Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations began on Sunday 23 and will run until Saturday 29 May. The two teams representing Africa at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Russia will be decided on Friday 28 May when the semi-finals are played.
