A dramatic 5-4 win on extra time give the Azteca the crown in Nassau
The Mexican National Side emerged as champions of the Bahamas Beach Soccer Cup following an electric game against Spain, in which an extra time goal made the difference for the Azteca.
Ulises Torres swept The Tri ahead after a goalless first period, and, despite Antonio’s equalizer three minutes later, the Mexican side managed to stay ahead for most of the game, with Jair Aleman bagging the 1-2 before the end of the second leg.
The third period began with things getting worse for Spain, with Fernando Guisado deflecting a ball to the back of his own nets.
But Joaquin Alonso’s side knew how to react, and a 3-0 run, with Antonio and Llorenç (2 goals) brilliantly firing home three chances to equalize the score and sending the game to extra time.
During that additional three minutes, Abdiel Villa found the crack in La Roja’s rearguard to give his side the crown of this Bahamas Beach Soccer Cup, confirming the international status of this CONCACAF giant.
USA snatch bronze
In the fight for the third place in Nassau, the USA stood more solid to upset the hosts (2-4) Bahamas. A new stunning performance by the competition’s top scorer Nick Perera had again a lot to do with the outcome of the Stars and Stripes.
USA managed to progressively grow their advantage until the 0-3 midway half third period, and suffocated any attempt by the hosts to react immediately neutralizing St Fleur’s hit with the 1-4.
Beneby’s pulled one back for the Bahamian side, but, with just seconds to go, the time was not enough to dream of a comeback.
