Flamengo defeat Vasco da Gama to clinch Carioca Championship title
Vasco da Gama missed out on Carioca Championship glory to a strong Flamengo team in the competition final in Rio de Janeiro.
Following a third-place Mundialito de Clubes finish earlier in the month, Flamengo were eager to get their hands on a trophy at the very next opportunity. This time, they fought all the way to first place in Rio de Janeiro to win the Campeonato Carioca.
The men in black and red saw off fellow finalists Vasco da Gama by seven goals to three to claim a comfortable victory.
It certainly helped Flamengo having the best player in the world amongst their ranks… Llorenç netted a hat-trick in the final, winning both the individual awards for being the Top Scorer and the MVP.
It was the second final that Vasco had lost in a matter of months, after missing out to Vitoria in the Copa Libertadores in a tense penalty shootout.
The women’s Flamengo team made it all the way to the final too, but were defeated by a clinical Boavista side by four goals to two.
In the Under-20 final, Vasco da Gama had the chance to take some silverware where the senior side had failed. But it was Boavista who just edged their rivals by winning the game 5-4.
Congratulations to Joinville!
It is also worth giving Joinville a special mention, after they beat Barrense 5-0 in the final of the Santa Catarina Beach Soccer Championship!
