The country’s beach soccer programme now includes a youth side.
The Costa Rican Football Federation have strengthened their commitment to the development of beach soccer with the addition of a national youth team.
The federation has, for a number of months, been putting into place the foundations for such a team with national games, trials and junior tournaments, leading to the recent formation of the under-20 team.
Full training began in January with plans in place for the team to supply the next generation of players for the full national team in years to come.
“It’s a selection of players of 16, 17 and 18 years of age,” said Dennis Montoya – the technical assistant of the national beach soccer team.
“We want, at some point, for these players to be part of the senior team and strengthen it together with experienced players, and we are also working on participating in worldwide tournaments alongside other youth teams.
“We have [players from] San Carlos, Sámara, Limón, Puntarenas, Costa de Pajaros, Garabito, Punta Leona, San José – in short, from all over the country.”
Costa Rica are regular participants in the CONCACAF Beach Soccer Championship – finishing second back in 2009 – and also featured at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in 2009.
