The Swiss club took down FC Barcelona in the 6th annual event on November 15th at the Courland Heritage Park
The Swiss Chargers overcame FC Barcelona 2-0 to hold onto the championship title at the 6th annual Bago Sports Beach Soccer Championship at the Courland Heritage Park, Courland. The Chargers were up against the powerful Spanish club which included several world class players including Llorenc Gomez, Jonathan Torohia, Bruno Xavier, and Amarelle. Torohia was named the top goal keeper at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2015 Espinho. Amarelle was the top player at the 2008 World Cup in France. Xavier won the MVP Award at the 2013 World Cup. However, the Swiss clubs’ goal keeper, a local from Trinidad and Tobago, Victor Thomas, out-shone his rivals at Turtle Beach denying the shooting power of Barcelona with some spectacular and crucial saves. Before the thrilling final the two exciting semi-finals set the stage earlier in the day for the cracker of a finale. The first semi-final had the Swiss Chargers defeat the POS Patriots 8-3, while FC Barcelona overcame Club Meta.
In the final match on Sunday, FC Barcelona made the first move for goal but Amarelle’s shot in the second minute went just wide. Rodrigo gave the Chargers the lead on the first goal of the match in the final minute of the first period. He placed a chip well over the head of Torohia to silence the fans who had turned up to see Barcelona in action. Barcelona came out in the second frame determined to score the equalizer as Amarelle continued his assault on the Chargers’ goal but again Thomas stood in the way. The Barcelona strikers continue to launch shots at their opponents’ goal but Thomas could not be beaten.
In the final 12 minutes, Amarelle and Llorenç stepped up the pressure for Barcelona but could not find the back of the net. Dahm got the second tally for Chargers with five minutes left in the game. Amarelle responded with another of his trade-mark bicycle shots but Thomas kept the ball safe from the back of the net. BSC Chargers retained the crown they won in 2014 after beating Miami United on penalty kicks. For his heroics in goal, Thomas was named the Best Goal Keeper and Most Valuable Player. Rodrigo (Swiss Chargers) topped the Most Goal chart with 19 goals.
In addition to the Men’s tournament, it was the also the inaugural women’s event, which had the POS Patriots dispatch the Tobago Chicas 5-2 in the final. Among the dignitaries and sponsors on the final day were Minister in Officer of the Prime Minister and Member of Parliament for Tobago East Ayana Webster Roy, Secretary of Education, Youth Affairs and Sport Huey Cadette, Secretary of Health and Social Services Claudia Groome-Duke, Senator Nadine Stewart, Calista Gregoire of the Ministry of Sports, and Tourism Development Company General Manager of Marketing, Warren Solomon.
