Acapulco Beach Soccer Cup 2024 Presented at Mexican Football Association

The second edition of the competition will take place from 13th to 15th December.

The Acapulco Beach Soccer Cup 2024 is set to return, and was officially presented today at a press conference held at the headquarters of the Mexican Football Association (FMF).

Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, the Arena GNP Seguros in Acapulco will once again host both the men’s and women’s tournaments between 13th and 15th December, with a total of four matches each day.

Played in a league format, the Acapulco Beach Soccer Cup 2024 will see Mexico, Spain, the USA, and Colombia compete in the men’s tournament, while the women’s competition will feature Mexico, Spain, the USA, and Costa Rica.

Josep Ponset, Director of Events at Beach Soccer Worldwide, highlighted the importance of holding the press conference at the headquarters of such a prestigious institution as the FMF, and added:

“We want to continue to grow the Acapulco Beach Soccer Cup after last year’s success, alongside the Estado de Guerrero, Mundo Imperial, and the Mexican Football Association.”

“This event provides a fantastic opportunity for the local men’s and women’s national teams to compete, to showcase our sport in Mexico, and to promote Acapulco and Guerrero as key tourist destinations,” Ponset continued. “With the competition being broadcast in more than 50 countries, we’re reaching an ever-growing audience worldwide.”

During the press conference, Fátima Leyva, Head Coach of the Mexican Women’s Beach Soccer National Team, discussed the growing popularity of the sport in Mexico. She asked the audience how familiar they were with beach soccer and acknowledged that, while it might be lesser-known due to other priorities, the sport is rapidly becoming a key player in the development of football in the country.

“Beach soccer is a fantastic spectacle for fans,” Leyva remarked. “For the development of both men’s and women’s football in Mexico, this sport can contribute enormously. If we start getting younger players onto the sand—at an age where they can’t yet work with heavy weights in the gym—it can have huge benefits for them. They’ll gain stamina, power, reflexes, and explosiveness.”

Leyva also praised the growth of beach soccer in the region, particularly in countries such as the USA, El Salvador, and Costa Rica, the latter of which is beginning to embrace the sport.

Jesús Mena, Physical Trainer for the Mexican Men’s Beach Soccer National Team, encouraged fans to attend the event in person for an unforgettable experience.

“If you have the chance to be here in Acapulco, don’t miss it,” Mena urged. “The atmosphere, the energy of the players, and the pace of the game will give you an extra edge to enjoy this fantastic sport.”

The Acapulco Beach Soccer Cup will be much more than a sports tournament. Through initiatives led by the Beach Soccer Foundation, the event will support key social responsibility projects under the banner “A Goal for Acapulco”, a campaign aimed at helping the city recover after the devastation of last year’s hurricanes. The activities include:

  • Clean the Beach – Raising awareness about environmental issues.
  • Kid’s Day – Inspiring young people to engage in sport.
  • Skin Care Prevention – Highlighting the importance of skin health, particularly in coastal areas.

“We aim to use sport as a means to develop all the values that are good for society,” Josep Ponset added.

In 2023, Colombia won the men’s tournament, while the USA lifted the women’s trophy. Both teams will be looking to defend their titles in this year’s competition.
