The last day of group matches confirmed the best four of the Women's Euro Winners Cup
Goals and drama saw WFC Zvezda, Madrid CFF, Terrassa and Marseille BT confirmed as the four semi-finalists in the Women’s Euro Winners Cup 2021, as the group stage of the competition drew to an end.
Zvezda were the ones advancing to the semi-finals with better records, after sealing yet another three points today for an overall total of 15 in the group stage, while 2019 Champions AIS Playas de San Javier were their last opponents in this stage, and the Spaniards needed to win to secure a berth onto next round.
The game turned out to be a brilliant beach soccer battle, in which the Saint Petersburg ladies needed to give their best to keep their pole position in the group standings. Although Playas de San Javier took a 3-1 lead in the first period, Kanaev’s side turned things around, with Zubilova’s winner in the last stages of the game.
Also managing to defend their top spot, Terrassa ended up as the top team in Group A, after defeating all of the opponents that they came across. New Team RCS were the last ones, and really made things hard for the Catalan side. But Terrassa were lucky to have Adriana Manau on their side, and she made all the difference. Five goals by the 23-year old (yesterday was her birthday) gave herself and her team the best present, and confirmed their place in the next round of the Women’s Euro Winners Cup 2021.
Madrid, with nine points, topped the table at Group B, which left defending champions Mriya without the chance to defend their title this year. Marseille, with four wins, became the best-ranked second team in the competition, thus clinching the last berth in the semi-finals in Nazaré, where they will meet WFC Zvezda. Madrid CFF and Terrassa and vie for the other place in the final.
