Table-toppers Spain and Switzerland make final

The sides will compete for the Euro Beach Soccer Cup in Cascais.

Switzerland will face Spain in the final of the inaugural Euro Beach Soccer Cup in Cascais on Sunday after topping their respective groups on Saturday.

Having edged the Netherlands on Friday, Switzerland then saw off England 5-4 (AET), while Spain picked up back-to-back victories against hosts Portugal and the Dutch to finish first in Group B.

The Swiss were first up as they came through a thrilling contest in extra-time against England in a captivating encounter that saw both sides enjoy the lead throughout.

Indeed, England were on course to spring a surprise as they led 4-3 midway through the final period, thanks partly to a Widdowson brace, before two headers from captain Maurer dragged the Swiss through and into Sunday’s final.

England would salvage something from Saturday’s action, as they made the third-place play-off with a 5-3 win over Greece.

Both sides had been edged out by the Swiss, but Clark’s hat-trick helped the Three Lions claim their first victory of the competition and ensure a meeting with Portugal on Sunday.

The hosts were beaten 4-3 in extra time by Spain, despite leading 2-1 going into the final period as Mario Narciso’s side looked on course for top spot.

However, Asensio and Moreira helped take the tie into extra-time where Carolina Gonzalez proved the hero, ensuring a Spanish win against the Dutch would take them to the final.

And it was captain Miron who came to the rescue for Joaquin Alonso’s charges in the final match of the day, as Spain left it late to snatch a 3-2 victory against the Netherlands.

Spain led through Asensio but were reeled in by the Dutch and trailed going into the final 12 minutes.

However, like in their defeat to the Swiss, Netherlands were undone by a late comeback as Spain’s skipper Miron scored twice to condemn the Dutch to the fifth-place play-off.
