The tightly contested battle nearly went into overtime but Switzerland scored the decider too late for Costa Rica to respond
Switzerland saw off Costa Rica 4-3 to secure passage to the 2015 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup quarter-finals. Goals from Dejan Stankovic, Noel Ott and Stephan Leu put the Swiss in a comfortable position before Costa Rica fought back to level the scores through Jose Mendoza, goalkeeper Vladimir Adanis and Greivin Pacheco. Philipp Borer was the Swiss match-winner, just over a minute from time.
Stankovic got things started for the Swiss with a wonderful free-kick less than three minutes into the game, and Ott made sure Georg Klauser had little to alter as the first period ended with a commanding two-goal lead for La Nati.
The Swiss victory means Italy also progress to the last eight, and the two European sides will learn their opponents when Group A concludes on Monday with Argentina, Japan, Portugal and Senegal all still potential quarter-finalists in Espinho.
