Rosario Central and Punta Hermosa qualify in Group B, as CD Iquique earns the remaining berth in Group B
A new breathtaking matchday finally defined the three teams that will join Vasco da Gama in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores Fútbol Playa taking place in Santos (Brasil) this week.
Punta Hermosa was the first to merit that honor, in a game in which everything seemed in the right track for the until the last minute, when Zulueta of Santa Marta missed a penalty only to make up for that mistake in the last second to send the game into extra time.
The score remained untouched in the additional 3 minutes, and everything was to be decided from the 9 meters distance. Santa Marta seemed to lose all their inspiration at that moment, whereas Punta Hermosa stayed perfect to seal their ticket to semifinals.
But even more incredible was the way CD Iquique sealed their go-through… Despite being ahead for most of the game, the Chileans saw Bolivian champions Hamacas FC turn score the equalizer with just one minute to go. score around, with the 3-4, with just 27 seconds to go…
What happened in the next seconds can only be defined as science fiction, or beach soccer… Hamacas seemed to seal the win with the 3-4 27 seconds before the final whistle but, amazingly enough, CD Iquique did not surrender, and two amazing goals by Echeverría meant they will go on in the competition, amongst the four best teams in this Copa America.
CA Rosario Central will be another of the continental giants vying for a place in the final of the competition, after a hard-fought win over Paraguay’s CN Puerta del Lago. Despite the Guaraní stepped ahead in the score, the Argentineans knew how to work their way to the final, with a safe distance that proved key in the last minutes of the game, when the attempts by Puerta del Lago brought the score really tight.
In the last game of the day, Vasco da Gama brought on a new stunning performance, and run past Club Malvin of Uruguay to close this group stage with perfect registers. Nothing else than that was at stake in this match , and the Trem Bala da Colina would not miss that opportunity to prove, once again, that they really want this Copa Libertadores.
