Botafogo, Vasco, Sampaio Corrêa and Vitória seal places in the next round of the competition
The second day of Copa do Brazil action in Rio’s Parque Olímpico da Barra, was packed full of goals – even more that yesterday – and four teams saw their passage into the next round secured, after winning their opening two matches.
Four other teams, however, saw their Copa campaigns cut short with a game still to be played on Matchday Three.
The day began with a tight game in Group A, where Botafogo met America-RN. The Brazilian national team star, Rodrigo, just 12 days after winning the MVP awards in the Huawei Intercontinental Cup Dubai, scored four times for Botafogo, to earn a 7 to 5 win for his side, as well as the first spot in the final four.
Next it was the turn of Vitoria to confirm their progress to the semi-finals, by defeating Gama by six goals to three. On the scoresheet for Vitoria were: Alisson (2) , Sávio, Anderson Wesley, Kanela and Reyder.
They made it six points out of two games and will face Sampaio Corrêa (who are also through to the next stage) to decide who finishes the group stage on top.
In the following game, Vasco took on Boavista for the chance to also claim their place in the last four. After putting 10 past América-RN yesterday, Vasco gave the young alvi-verde side little chance, administering a beating of 9-2 and, in the process, confirming their place in the semi-finals.
The goals were converted by Jordan (2), Antônio (2), Benjinha, Mateusinho, Lucão, Rafinha and Alejandro for Vasco, while two consolations goals from Jorge and Fred were all that Boavista took from the game.
Rounding off the day, Sampaio Corrêa turned their sights on the youthful squad of Murici-AL, who initially fought bravely to maintain a very closely-matched bout. The first period ended with the scores tied at one a piece.
However, the star-studded Sampaio Corrêa moved into a superior gear in the second and third periods. Goals from Edinho (3), Serginho (2), Datinha (2), Zé Lucas (2) and Paulinho carved out a 10-7 victory, sealing a spot in the semi-finals, with still one game of the group stages to play.
As the places in the next round all confirmed, the third and final day of group matches (Thursday 22nd), half of the matches will consist of battles for a first-place finish, while the other half will be about not finishing in last place.
