Continental kings Brazil claim opening win at CONMEBOL Championship

Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and Colombia won tight games on Day 1 in Rio de Janeiro


South America is one step closer to finding out which nations will represent the continent at the 2021 FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Russia.

There were opening wins for Paraguay, Uruguay and Colombia on Day 1 of the CONMEBOL Championship, as well as a victory for reigning champions, who downed Peru six goals to three.

Goals from Brendo, Catarino, Alisson, Ze Lucas and a double from Edson Hulk saw a young Brazilian squad overcome Peru to go top of Group A.

In the other Group A match, two late goals from Benitez and Carballo helped the hosts of the previous FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, Paraguay, beat Venezuela by six goals to four.

Acosta’s winner grabbed three points for Colombia with just two minutes of the match left in Group B, while second-period goals from Cabrera and Catardo won Uruguay the match against their Argentinian rivals to see La Celeste move to top of Group B.

Three of the ten teams will make it to the world championships in Russia. The CONMEBOL Beach Soccer Championship – acting at the Qualifier for the World Cup –is being held from from 26 June to 4 July at Barra de Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
