On day two of the competition in the Uruguayan capital, the Brazilians proved a cut above their Group B opponents in a comprehensive 12-4 victory, which puts them three points clear at the summit going into their rest day on Tuesday.
Paraguay can draw level if they get past Ecuador today – the latter having opened their account for their competition with a 5-3 reversal at the hands of Peru.
In Group A, hosts Uruguay enjoy a slender advantage after seeing off Bolivia on penalties in a close-fought contest.
With the sides level at 3-3 after extra-time, it was the Uruguayans who held their nerve from the spot to clinch the shootout 3-2 and edge to the top of the table.
Chile also made their debut in the tournament on Monday, going down 6-3 to Colombia, but will hope to bounce back against the Argentines in a group that still remains up for grabs.
