The OFC Beach Soccer Men's Nations Cup 2024 is underway
Papua New Guinea win 8-6 against Fiji.
The opening match of the OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup 2024 saw Papua New Guinea and Fiji take to the sands of Honiara.
An exciting first period saw six goals scored in the encounter, as Papua New Guinea took a 4-2 lead into the second phase of play.
Benard secured his second goal of the fixture early into the second period to extend Papua New Guinea’s lead in the match, as Fiji’s Steven Dean pulled a goal to reduce the deficit. Two more goals followed in the period, with both sides hitting the target once again as two goals separated the nations with 12 minutes to play.
Despite valiant effort from the Fijians in the third and final period, netting twice in the period, Papua New Guinea held on to get off to a winning start as Joe Vere struck and Benard completed his hat-trick in the final phase of play.
Tahiti win 10-9 against Solomon Islands.
Action continued as host nation Solomon Islands took on World Cup 2024 quarter-finalists Tahiti in the second match of the OFC Beach Soccer Men’s Nations Cup 2024.
Similarly to the first match of the competition, the opening period of the match saw goals fly in at both ends. The host nation had the advantage on two occasions in the period, but it was Tahitians who led the match 4-3 when the period came to a close.
Goal scoring continued in the second period, with Tahiti finding the net twice in the period and Solomon Islands struck three times, meaning the scores were level at 6-6 heading into the third period.
It was an intense and dramatic finish to the match as another seven goals were scored, and it was just one goal which separated the sides in the end as Tahiti came out on top with a 10-9 triumph.
