Nail-biting day defines Round of 16

Emotion grows as knock-out stages arrive for the 16 surviving squads

Aluminios Sotelo virtually qualified after hammering Kreiss

Aluminios Sotelo put themselves into a very comfortable position in Group A, after blasting Kreiss in the opening match of day 3 in this Euro Winners Cup 2014 taking place in Catania. The Spaniards occupy now the second place in Group A, and will take on the Latvian again in a match that will grant both teams the possibility to fight in equal conditions against the rest of third-ranked sides of the other groups. This procedure also applies to groups C and D, three-side pools.

After the rewardless effort brought on yesterday by the Spaniards against hosts Catania, Sotelo did not want to miss another chance, and began their match against Kress in high intensity. That got them commanding the game rather soon, with Fran Mejías opening the score midway first period. The result was tight though, and the Liga champions knew an extra push was needed. That came in the second period, with a 4-0 run that left the score 5-0.

Just 12 minutes remaining seemed little room for Kreiss to come back such an unbalanced score, but the Latvian did not give up trying. Lavrenovs pulled the first back for his team, only to find, though, a tough reply by the Spanish side, with two goals by F. Sotelo to push the difference to 6-1. In the remaining minutes, Stepanovs hit again for Kreiss, but Salvadoran star Frank Velásquez closed the score for Aluminios Sotelo with the 8-2.

Goals: 1-0: Fran Mejías, min. 6 (1); 2-0: Frank, min. 10 (2); 3-0: F. Sotelo, min. 7 (2); 4-0: A. Del Amor, min. 3 (2); 5-0: Carrera, min. 1 (2); 5-1: Lavrenovs, min. 7 (3); 6-1: F. Sotelo, min. 4 (3); 7-1: F. Sotelo, min. 3 (3); 7-2: Stepanovs, min. 0 (3); 8-2: Frank, min. 0 (3);

Bate Borisov takes 1st in group with win

The 3-1 win for Bate Borisov of Belarus over Ushkyn-Iskra of Kazajistan gave them the top spot in Group D and puts them into the round of 16. The very close match was not decided until the final few minutes when Bate scored an insurance goal. Ushkyn fought throughout but were unable to get rolling on offense. The Kazakhstan club will face Seferihisar CittaSlow  later in the day to determine the 2nd place finisher, who will advance to the knockout stages also.

Goalkeeping was at a premium in the 1st period as both teams utilized their keepers often and only Bate was able to socre, going into the first break up 1-0. The 2nd frame was even more charged than the first, with both teams scoring once, though Ushkyn held the momentum going into the final frame as they scored in the final seconds. The deciding period was just as close as the first two and both sides took quality shots on goal but the Belarusian side were the only ones to score in the frame and they stood strong against the Ushkyn attacks.

Goals: 1-0: Karpov, min. 11 (1); 2-0: Karpov, min. 9 (2); 2-1: Birzhan, min. 0 (2); 3-1: Haiduk, min. 4 (3).

Falfala hits first and sees go-through much closer

Falfala Kfar Qassem dominated Dutch champions Beach Soccer Egmond in the first match deciding who takes second in group C, with Ukrainian Artur Music already well positioned as champion of the group. The Israeli proved more compact than the Netherlanders, and bagged a significant win that makes their live much easier in the three-side pool.

That first advantage had Egmond swimming against the current as of the very beginning of the game. Each time the ‘Orange’ tried to counteract the Israeli advantage, they were responded. The Dutch never managed to cut the distance strongly enough to make Falfala’s dominion tremble. No matter how hard they fought to keep afloat, the Israeli always found a way to immediately deny their expectations.

The final 5-9 leaves Falfala Kfar Qassem with three points, and the two teams will square off again to see who finishes second and third.

Goals: 0-1: Noor, min. 8 (1); 0-2: Reyder, min. 8 (1); 1-2: Ruder, min. 5 (1); 1-3: Samih, min. 5 (1); 1-4: Ahmed, min. 2 (1); 1-5; Ahmed, min. 7 (2); 2-5: Kramer; 2-6: Ahmed, min. 2 (2); 2-7: Samir, min. 1 (2); 3-7: Weijers, min. 0 (2); 3-8: Ahmed, min. 6 (3); 4-8: Klijbroek, min. 6 (3); 5-8: Klijbroek, min. 2 (3); 5-9: Samih, min. 1 (3)

Goldwin Pluss wins and gets within the best 16

The 8-3 victory for the Hungarian club, Goldwin Pluss Bodon FC, over Rostocker Robben from Germany was very thrilling and gave viewers much late game excitement. The win propels Goldwin to the elimination rounds, whereas the loss for Rostocker left them on the outside looking in, though when faced with tough competition, they did extremely well.

It was very important that the Hungarian side came out strong offensively to set the tempo, and it worked as they scored four first period goals without conceding any. Energy and pace were in abundance in the middle frame as you could see the speed and pace of the German club increase and the extra effort paid off with a last minute goal. Making sure that they did not give up their big lead, Goldwin scored four more goals, but not before allowing two more from the Germans, which made the last few minutes very busy for both teams and spectators.

Goals: 1-0: Fekete, min. 9 (1); 2-0: Szackso, min. 8 (1); 3-0: Besenyei, min. 7 (1); 4-0: Szackso, min. 6 (1); 4-1: Neumann, min. 2 (2); 5-1: Fekete, min. 6 (3); 5-2: Bullerjahn, min. 6 (3); 6-2: Ughy, min. 3 (3); 6-3: Bullerjahn, min. 2 (3); 7-3: Besenyei, min. 1 (3); 8-3: Badalik, min. 0 (3).

Bohemians use stout defense and inspired attack to advance to next round

Bohemians 1905 joined the pack traveling to next round, following a 7-2 win over English Portsmouth Beach Soccer Club. The Czech used a solid defense and a prolific attack to seal a victory that sees them amongst the best 16 teams in this Euro Winners Cup 2014. A 5-0 run, and an inspired afternoon by their attacking ranks helped Bohemians cruise past Pompey, who are left with no points in Group E pool, and, consequently, eliminated of the competition.

This match was also the proof that former eleven-a-side star Jan Koller is getting used to playing on the sand. The former Borussia Dortmund striker scored two goals today that helped his team to make it to next round, together with Bocek’s hat trick and Chalupa’s double. If he keeps this level, it is just a matter of days that Koller earns his first cap for the Czech Republic Beach Soccer National side.

Corbett’s and Osso’s hits were far not enough for Portsmouth. When the English found their opponent’s back of the net, the score was already too unbalanced to bring on any dramatic change on the sand.

Goals: 1-0: Bocek, min. 3 (1); 2-0: Koller, min. 10 (2); 3-0: Bocek, min. 3 (2); 3-1: Corbett, min. 11 (3); 4-1: Koller, min. 5 (3); 5-1: Chalupa, min. 4 (3); 5-2: Osso, min. 4 (3); 6-2: Chalupa, min. 0 (3); 7-2: Bocek, min. 0 (3);

Marseille hangs on in high scoring affair

The 9-5 victory for the Marseille Beach Team, from France, over Bulgaria´s top club, MFC Spartak 2012 was highlighted by sic goals from Bru of Marseille. The win gives the French side their first win of the tournament subsequent three points, and most probably gets them access to next round as the best third-ranked side.

The first period was packed with shots and the ones that connected were spectacular goals as France´s club four to the zero for Spartak. Both teams were very aggressive in the middle frame as the teams were issued multiple cards and they capitalized on the corresponding changes. The Bulgarian squad scored four compared to only one for Marseille and the score was 4-5, advantage Marseille, going into the final frame. Intensity grew with each shot and neither side shied away from contact or attempt on goal. Spartak was spurred on by a near comeback, coming within one goal, but the French team restored their four goal lead and survived the attacks.

Goals: 0-1: Bru, min. 9 (1); 0-2: Marques, min. 6 (1); 0-3: Bru, min. 2 (1); 0-4: Bru, min. 0 (1); 1-4: Tsvetkov, 10 (2); 2-4: Hristov, min. 4 (2); 2-5: Bru, min. 4 (2); 3-5: Tsvetkov, min. 4 (2); 4-5: Tsvetkov, min. 1 (2); 4-6: Bru, min. 9 (3); 5-6: Hristov, min. 8 (3); 5-7: Mahraoui, min. 5 (3); 5-8: Marques, min. 4 (3); 5-9: Bru, min. 1 (3).

Bad third period leaves Terracina needing Sable Dancer’s win

After their 7-3 defeat to Lokomotiv Moscow, Terracina has only one option to get into the next round, and this necessarily implies a win by Sable Dancers Bern that would make them the second best third-ranked side. The Puntini hit the sand against the defending European champions knowing that a win would have them absolutely in, but a heavy defeat would kick them out. Despite hitting first, and being always close on the score, Terracina had to stomach an inspired third period by the Muscovite for a final 4-goal defeat.

Llorenç, unmistakable star for Terracina with three hits today, swept the biancoazzurri ahead. Just seconds afterwards, though, Peremitin equalized the score, and Leonov pushed the Russian side ahead. Bukhlistkiy widened the distance, but Llorenç could pull one back for the Transalpine.

Despite they tried to stay always close to their strong opponents, the 3-0 run in the last frame made life really difficult for Del Duca’s side, who will now need external help to get amongst the best 16 teams in the competition.

Goals: 0-1: Llorenç, min. 10 (1); 1-1: Peremitin, min. 10 (1); 2-1: Leonov, min. 8 (1); 3-1: Bukhlistkiy, min. 6 (1); 3-2: Llorenç, min. 5 (1); 4-2: Datinha, min. 5 (2); 4-3: Llorenç, min. 2 (2) 5-3: Gorchinskiy, min. 10 (3); 6-3: Rafinha, min. 9 (3); 7-3: Shaykov, min. 5 (3);

Milano BS crowned 1st in Group F after thrilling win

The 7-6 victory for Milano BS, from Italy, gives them sole possession of the top spot in their group as both teams head to the Round of 16. The action was very lopsided at first, with the Italian side playing very well, and then the roles were reversed and the Polish side came from behind and took the lead, only to have it snatched back from them at the last minute. Grembach earns second in the group and will play in the Round of 16 beginning on Friday, along with Milano, who will be the higher seed.

The first period had a little of everything as both teams scored, flashed brilliance on defense, and were generally aggressive on both ends of the pitch. Neither side wanted to give in and the determination was evident as both clubs scored in the middle frame, Grembach last, making the score 4-2, Milano, at the end of the period. The last period began with much still undecided and Grembach played strong enough to muster two early goals and pull even with the Italian side. Then late in the period the Polish squad took the lead back but could not stop the late push from Milano and the intense action continued with the rossoneri connecting on a last minute penalty kick to seal the win.

Goals: 1-0: Leo, min. 10 (1);  2-0: Leo, min. 9 (1); 2-1: Ziober, min. 8 (1); 3-1: Maiorano, min. 1 (1); 4-1: Campolongo, min. 3 (2); 4-2: Marciniak, min. 2 (2); 4-3: Saganowski, min. 8 (3); 4-4: Stankovic, min. 8 (3); 4-5: Golanski, min. 3 (3); 5-5: Eudin, min. 3 (3); 6-5: Leo, min. 2 (3); 6-6: Sagnowski, min. 2 (3); 7-6: Leo, min. 2 (3).

Tahitian connection has Sable Dancers topping group E

Sable Dancer’s win over Moldovan champions CS Djoker – Tornado Chisinau happened to be a much tougher job than expected. Indeed, it was not until the third period that the Swiss side could definitely take off to the points. The Tiki Toa trace in the game was more than remarkable, as the four goals scored by Polynesian players for Sable Dancers were a crucial contribution for the final result.

Budigai’s 0-1 was a clear message that the Moldovans were ready for the fight, and to try their best to take their chances to be in the Round of 16 of this Euro Winners Cup. Indeed, after Marrucci’s equalizer, along came again the mighty CS Djoker to upset the Swiss once again with the 1-2. Before the end of the period, Angelo Tchen and Teva Zaveroni swept Sable Dancers ahead for the first time, only to see Negara equalize the score right over the hooter.

Definitive turnover came finally at the last leg. Labaste, with the 4-3, and Angel, backheeling the ball in for the 5-3, set things on the right track for Schirinzi’s side, which advances to the next round as the best of their group. CS Djoker, on the other hand, were finally denied their chances and are left out of the competition.

Goals: 0-1: Budigai, min. 1 (1); 1-1: Marrucci, min. 11 (2); 1-2: Cojusea, min. 11 (2); 2-2: Angel, min. 3 (2); 3-2: Zaveroni, min. 0 (2); 3-3: Negara, min. 0 (2); 4-3: Labaste, min. 5 (3); 5-3: Angel, min. 0 (3);

AO Kefallinia completes comeback for win

The 5-3 win for the Greek side, AO Kefallinia, over SK Augur Enemat from Estonia was very difficult but exciting from whistle to whistle. Both sides came into the match looking for their first win and first points of the tournament and now the Greek side owns those bragging rights, so Augur will get back home with their hands empty.

The opening minutes of the match were very defensive, though the Estonian side was able to breakthrough early, however both teams scored another goal and the first period ended with a score of 2-1, Augur on top. The middle frame was a beach soccer fans´ delight with goals and emotions flying, as can be expected in such a tightly contested match, and the Greek side used the energy to score two goals and head into the final frame up by 3-2. Marmor, coach of Estonian side, made a wrong reading of the game when being ahead and the Greek took advantage of a better positioning and more spirited beach soccer to turn the score around and dominate. The last frame was back and forth with both teams exchanging late goals until Kefallinia scored a safety goal to leave with the win.

Goals: 0-1: Nommiko, min. 8 (1); 0-2: Arst, min. 0 (1); 1-2: Salapatas, min. 0 (1); 2-2: Warzycha, min. 7 (2); 3-2: Amanatidis, min. 0 (2); 3-3: Romka, min. 9 (3); 4-3; Gkritzalis, min. 7 (3); 5-3: Triantafyllidis, min. 9 (3).

Aluminios Sotelo confirms second place in group

A new convincing victory had the Spanish Champions Aluminios Sotelo accessing the round of 16 as the second ranked team in group A. The 5-1 over Kreiss left little room for doubt, as it confirmed the green light for the Spaniards and the red one for the Latvian. Marin, with three goals this afternoon, led the way for Aluminios Sotelo, which will now take on the defending champions Lokomotiv Moscow for a place in Quarterfinals.

A 3-0 run in the first stage of the game would make it already too late for Kreiss when they sought to react. And when they shyly did, two more goals by the Spaniards would maintain the status quo of the game. With the final whistle, Aluminios Sotelo keep onwards with six points, whereas Kreiss see their options definitely ruled out.

Goals: 1-0: Sens (og), min. 6 (1); 2-0: Martín, min. 6 (1); 3-0: Martín, min. 10 (2); 3-1: Vasiljevs, min. 9 (2); 4-1: Martín, min. 5 (2); 5-1: Frank, min. 3 (3)

Seferihisar finds way into elimination rounds

The 5-3 win for Seferihisar CittaSlow from Turkey over Ushkyn-Iskra of Kazakhstan was up and down throughout with both teams taking the lead, losing it, and then getting back again. The rubber match between these two sides was the decider for who would advance to the next stage and who would be sitting at home for the elimination rounds. The Turkish squad earned the right to play on Friday in the Round of 16, while the Kazakhstan club will not, despite a fiercely fought tournament.

The last group stage match which was a play-in game for the Round of 16, was very tactical from the outset and no one was able to outsmart the others´ defense and the score remained tied at 0 after 1. The Kazakhstan side opened the scoring with an early goal in the second frame, but Seferihisar quickly responded to level the score at 1, which is how the period ended. The final frame dramatics had already been paved as both teams were in a heated battle that seemed to be fueled by each other’s intensity. The clubs exchanged goals until a late nail in the coffin goal was scored by the Turks to seal their victory.

Goals: 0-1: Nurzhan, min. 9 (2); 1-1: Maci, min. 8 (2); 1-2: Nurzhan, min. 11 (3); 2-2: Baris, min. 11 (3); 3-2: Eremeev, min. 8 (3); 3-3: Artem, min. 6 (3); 4-3: Baris, min. 4 (3); 5-3: Sayil, min. 2 (3).

Kristall would not let Braga snatch first in group B…

One of the toughest games in the competition was precisely facing two teams that had already secured their berth amongst the best 16. But this is just what champions do, compete and go for the victory until the end, no matter what. This time, victory fell on Kirstall’s side, after SC Braga had brilliantly came from 2-0 behind, so head of the table in group B remains a property of the Russian champions.
The World’s best player, Brazilian Bruno Xavier, starring for Kristall, gave his team an early and consistent lead, with two goals in the first frame that made the score 2-0. With much effort, SC Braga managed to bounce back, and Batista and Jordan pulled two back to balance things 2-2 by the beginning of last period.

Anything could happen, with balls dangerously flying over both ends, but it was the Russians the ones to bag the prize. One of their National Side players, Krash, sealed the win, the points, and the first place in the group with the 3-2, that confirms Kristall will be playing against Marseille in the quarterfinals tomorrow. In turn, the Portuguese side will take on Israeli Falfala Kfar Qassem.

Goals: 1-0: Bruno Xavier, min. 8 (1); 2-0: Bruno Xavier, min. 3 (2); 2-1: Batista, min. 3 (2); 2-2: Jordan, min. 9 (3); 3-2: Krash, min. 5 (3)

Egmond wins but Falfala gets last laugh

The 5-1 win for BS Egmond of the Netherlands over Falfala Kfar Qassem from Israel was bittersweet as they avenged a loss earlier in the day to the same team but they did not advance to the knockout stages based on the slimmest of margins, a one unit less goal differential. Earlier in the day Falfala was victorious 9-5 and the four goal loss in the second match was just enough to push them through. The Dutch side was in a great position to change their fortunes and the tournament drastically but were unable to secure one more goal or the shut out.

Physical play was an important tactic from the start and both team put an evident emphasis on this. The Dutch seemed more poised as they scored four goals and gave up none in the opening round. The scoring in the second period slowed but the action did not, as Egmond scored a quick goal and looked to fend off the Israeli attacks, but the Falfala defense held despite not being able to get on the scoreboard. Defense was key for the Holland team in the final period as they needed to maintain a 5 goal lead and all worked perfectly until the final minutes when Falfala netted their first of the game and were able to squeeze into the Round of 16 despite the loss.

Goals: 0-1: Klijbroek, min. 10 (1); 0-2: Reep, min. 9 (1); 0-3: Kramer, min. 2 (1); 0-4: Romejin, min. 1 (1); 0-5: Wijker, min. 9 (2); 1-5: Yatim, min. 2 (3).
