France net 19 on day one as Portugal scrape a point against Morocco from the penalty spot
Day one of the Mediterranean Beach Games Patras 2019 saw hosts Greece down Syria for an opening win, while in Group B, France and Italy stormed to victory by netting 31 goals between them.
Portugal had a tougher and less lucrative route to victory, snatching a hard-fought point from a penalty shootout against Morocco after a 4-4 drawn in normal time, while their Hellenic hosts won 6-2 over Syria to top Group A.
Italy’s emphatic 12-3 win over Libya saw them seal an early three points but their efforts were eclipsed by France’s 19-1 thumping of Albania.
Day two sees a French-Italian face-off for the Group B topspot, while Albania and Libya will try to get off the mark.
Greece and Portugal will meet in the Group A, where a normal or extra time victory would see Mario Narciso’s men move ahead of their hosts in the ranking, as Syria and Morocco come together in a North African derby.
