Goals galore in Sal as Portugal and Spain pick up wins

Portugal stayed at 100 per cent while Spain got off the mark at the Sal Beach Soccer Cup on Saturday

Portugal made it two wins from two at the Sal Beach Soccer Cup on Saturday as they once again came from behind to beat England 5-2.

The world champions – having beaten Spain in dramatic circumstances on Friday – were behind against the leaders 10 minutes into the second period only for Jose Maria to cancel out Clarke’s opener.

But a brace from the impressive Be Martins as well as goals from Alan and Leo ensured Clarke’s second provided little consolation.

Bruno tested Jeffrey from distance after four minutes of tense play early in the first period before Pedro Silva rattled the England crossbar.

Jose Maria was next to go close with a header that struck the post and, after a brief interruption from a dog on the sand, Jeffrey was required to deny Jose Maria once more.

Neither side found a breakthrough in the first period but Farquharson brought a save from Andrade as England started the second strongly.

Temple’s header found the Portugal woodwork and Jose Maria angled over as chances continued to flow for both sides in an entertaining contest.

But England eventually found the breakthrough with a minute remaining of the second period as Clarke took his Sal tally to four thanks to a glanced header off Jeffrey’s kick.

However, Portugal drew level with a stunning team goal as Jose Maria nodded in the equaliser after impressive work from Be Martins and Alan down the left.

Portugal led three minutes into the first period as they once again came from behind – Be Martins firing a skidding shot past Jeffrey to get the world champions ahead.

It was Be Martins who extended Portugal’s lead with six minutes remaining as he produced again from distance – this time sending a free-kick in for a third.

With Portugal in their stride, Alan applied the finishing touch to another well worked team move late on before Leo added a fifth in the final stages.

Clarke provided a late consolation for England with a penalty but Portugal deservedly claimed the spoils with an accomplished display.

0-1: Clarke, min. 1 (2); 1-1: Jose Maria, min. 1 (2); 2-1: Be Martins, min. 9 (3); 3-1: Be Martins, min. 5 (3); 4-1: Alan, min. 3 (3); 5-1: Leo, min. 1 (3); 5-2: Clarke, min. 0 (3)

Spain hold off plucky Cape Verde

Hosts Cape Verde made a strong start but came up short as they were beaten by Spain on Saturday.

Spain came from two goals down to ease past hosts Cape Verde 9-2 on the second day of the Sal Beach Soccer Cup.

Cape Verde started brightly and were two to the good inside four minutes only for Spain to cancel out Givalder’s brace by the end of the first period.

The visitors then found their groove and were 5-2 ahead by the end of the second, with the lively Eduard completing his hat-trick in the final period to complete a deserved victory.

Having impressed in defeat to England, Givalder gave Cape Verde the perfect start when he capitalised on an error from Cristian to open the scoring for the home side.

Another mix-up at the back for Spain allowed Givalder to double the advantage soon after although Antonio’s free-kick reduced the deficit.

Spain struck the crossbar and, after Thomas was denied an open goal by a last-ditch challenge, Llorenc levelled late on in the first period with a fine acrobatic effort.

Givalder almost had his hat-trick early in the second period when his free-kick struck the crossbar and Cape Verde were punished when Antonio headed in Spain’s third from close range.

Pablo ensured Spain’s fourth when he nodded home at the far post while Eduard’s overhead kick put further daylight between the sides.

Cristiane kept Cape Verde in the contest with a string of smart saves but he could do little about Fernando’s low finish midway through the third period.

Eduard registered his second of the game when he got the final touch on Llorenc’s effort with the latter thwarting Nilton at close range soon after at the other end.

There was enough time for Antonio to register his fifth of the tournament from a free-kick before another from Llorenc saw Spain ease to a deserved win.

Goals: 1-0: Givalder min. 11 (1), 2-0: Givalder min. 9 (1); 2-1: Antonio min. 8 (1); 2-2: Llorenc, min. 0 (1), 3-2 Antonio, min. 10 (2); 4-2: Pablo, min. 4 (2); 5-2: Eduard, min. 0 (2); 6-2: Fernando, min 7 (3); 7-2: Eduard, min. 5 (3); 8-2 Antonio, min. 1 (3), 9-2 Llorenc, min 0 (3)
