Lukoil, City and ELMONT make it to the quarter-finals of the Russian cup in Sochi as hosts end campaign on zero points
It was a winless end to the cup campaign for local Sochi side Adler, but victories for Lukoil, City and ELMONT earned them the remaining three positions in the quarter-final of the FONBET Cup in Russia.
This is how 16 became eight on the final day of the group stages.
KRISTALL 6-1 ATAMAN
Already-qualified Kristall, rounded off the group stages with a win against Ataman, as Mauricinho scored his first goals of the cup. Fellow Brazilian, Datinia, also got on the scoresheet. Kristall will now face Lukoil in the quarter-finals.
ROSICH 2-5 DELTA
Both teams were already qualified ahead of the final match in Group B, but the Saratov side put five past the Moscow-based Rosich, with their Brazilian recruits proving the difference. Delta will play Spartak Moscow, and Rosich will play Lokomotiv, in the next round.
LUKOIL 8-1 GRINTIM
Lukoil are set to take on last year’s champions, Kristall, in their quarter-final fixture, after beating Grintam, whose cup campaign ends without the Samara side picking up any points. The match was plain sailing for Lukoil, who netted eight times to sink their group rivals.
SPARTAK 1-3 LOKOMOTIV
The final group match for these two already-qualified sides, was a juicy Moscow derby. Lokomotiv wasted no time in asserting their dominance, scoring three, first-period goals. Spartak managed to pull one back in the second but that is as far as they could go and the Railwaymen clinched first place.
CITY 7-3 LEX
When City met Lex, both teams still had a chance of making it into the next round, and there was a lot riding on this game. Khokhlyuk took an early lead for Lex but a hat-trick from Kozhinov, and two goals from Italian Ramacciotti, sent City through to face ELMONT in the quarters.
ADLER 5-8 ARGO
Neither side had won their two previous games and therefore had no chance of progressing to the next round, but a win on the last day would be the reward for this tie. Hat-tricks from Cherepanov and Basov sealed the three points for Argo and local side Adler finish the cup on no points.
STARS OF DYNAMO 2-9 ELMONT
A place in the finals against the Leningrad side, City, is what awaited ELMONT as the scored three goals in each period to take the team tally to a grand total of nine, four of which were scored by Vostrikov.
METTRANSTORG 1-6 KRYLIA SOVETOV
After losing to Spartak and Lokomotiv in the opening two games, Krylia Sovetov rounded off their cup campaign with a win against Mettranstorg, who had also lost against the two Moscow sides, leaving Sochi on no points
