Day two of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup 2017 on Friday saw victories for Japan, Portugal, Brazil and UAE.
Sensational Goto inspires Japan
Japan, the competition’s ninth most successful nation of all time, put on one of the most impressive performances so far in the Bahamas with a 9-4 win over European champions Poland in Group D.
Takasuke Goto, who was the Asian Beach Soccer Championship’s second-highest scorer with 11 goals, got Japan’s Bahamas 2017 campaign off to a thrilling start with two overhead kick goals in the opening interval.
Japan never took their foot off the pedal, as they stormed to a 7-2 lead after the first two periods.
Holders ease past debutants
FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup holders Portugal got off to a perfect start in the Bahamas with a 7-0 win over tournament debutants Panama.
Portugal jumped in front 3-0 with just over five minutes gone in the match and CONCACAF champions Panama were never able to tighten things up in the back.
Leo Martins and Ze Maria both scored braces for Portugal, who are making their eighth appearance at the tournament.
Brazil overcome Tahiti in Bahamas opener
Four-time champions Brazil made a positive start to their FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017 campaign with a 4-1 victory over Tahiti in their opening Group D match.
The South American champions had to come from behind to defeat their opponents from Oceania after Patrick Tepa’s fine strike gave Tahiti an early lead. Filipe equalised for Brazil before Bruno Xavier scored the match winner moments later in the first period.
UAE outlast Paraguay in Friday finale
Two goals from Haitham Mohamed helped United Arab Emirates to a 3-2 victory over Paraguay in their opening Group C match at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Bahamas 2017.
Making their fifth appearance at beach soccer’s showpiece event, the UAE never allowed their South American opponents to overtake them in the day’s fourth and final match in Nassau.
After Haitham scored twice, Waleed Beshr struck the winner in the third period to seal all three points for the Middle Eastern nation.
Though they fell just short, Paraguay made the Friday evening kick-off a contest after Carlos Carballo scored twice in reply.
