Draw sets groups for European Games Minsk 2019

In a great ceremony, EOC Ex. Committee Member Spyros Capralos said that “maybe we see beach soccer in the Olympics in the future”

The eight participants at the European Games Minsk 2019, which will take place between the 25th and 29th of June in the Belarussian capital, got to know their opponents in the group stage, after the draw held today at the Dinamo Olympic Stadium. 

Hosts Belarus were drawn into group A together with 2015 bronze medalists Portugal, Switzerland and Romania, whereas group B will see Italy, Spain, 2015 gold winners Russia and Ukraine square off for a place in semi-finals. 

Many personalities attended the ceremony, with the EOC Executive Committee Member Spyros Capralos and the MEGOC CEO, George Katulin or the Minister of Sports and Tourism of the Government of Belarus, Sergey Kovalchuk, ahead, together with the newly elected president of the Belarussian Football Association, Vladimir Bazanov, Gabino Renales, BSWW Deputy Vice-president, and the president of the Belarussian Beach Soccer Association 

Spyros Capralos was the first to take the floor, and highlighted that “beach soccer will certainly be tremendous success in the European Games. It is gaining more and more recognition in the continent and maybe one day we will see it be a part of the Olympic program“. Capralos also explained that the venue is looking good: “I have visited the stadium and I assure that it is going to be very beautiful“. 

In the same line, MEGOC CEO George Katulin explained the great feeling of committment and excitement everyone is experiencing: “Everybody at the Organizing Committee, is committed to make the event an opportunity to get all Europe together and to demonstrate the power of sport as a uniting and development force.“, he said.

Gabino, in turn, voiced the pride in being a part of such a magnificent sports festival once again. “We are really happy to be a part of the second European Games. Beach soccer was a great success in the previous Games, and stood as one of the best sports in terms of audience and atmosphere. After the great Baku 2015, Belarus took the baton with the intention to improve the previous records. The great committment of everyone involved, their passion and energy makes us believe that they will achieve that goal“.
