Anambra Warriors Lift Nigerian Beach Soccer League Title

This fifth season marks the Warriors’ first-ever league title, capping off a remarkable rise after finishing as runners-up last season.

The Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors etched their name into Nigerian beach soccer history, clinching their maiden national league title after a pulsating 3-3 draw and a tense 5-3 penalty shootout victory over reigning champions Kebbi Fishers BSC at Jabi Lake Resort in Abuja.

The super finals, attended by an enthusiastic crowd and prominent dignitaries marked a historic moment for the Nnewi-based side, who dethroned the three-time champions and joined Kada BSC as the only other club to have lifted the trophy in recent years.

Among the high-profile attendees were Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau (MON); NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi (MON); and NFF Executive Committee Member and Chairman of the Beach Soccer and Futsal Committee, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Nse Udofot Essien. Also present were Chief of Staff to the Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Salihu Abubakar; NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen; and NFF Director of Media & Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire.

Kebbi Fishers, the three-time champions, demonstrated trademark resilience, rallying from a 1–3 deficit to level the match through goals from Hassan Abdullahi, Taiwo Adams, and Hassan Muhammed. For the Warriors, Ekunjimi Eganosi, Peter Prosper, and Stanley Ekwo found the net before their composure from the penalty spot sealed a historic 5–3 victory.

Speaking after the match, NFF President Gusau commended the teams for their passion and commitment:

“This year’s league has been a remarkable display of exceptional talent and competitive spirit, underscoring the growth of beach soccer in Nigeria. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors on their historic triumph and encourage all other teams to continue striving for excellence.”

Despite falling short in the final, Kebbi Fishers remain the most decorated club in NBSL history, with three titles to their name.

This season will also be remembered for a milestone moment in women’s beach soccer. For the first time in the league’s history, a women’s exhibition match was held during the 2025 Super Finals at Jabi Lake Park, Abuja. Naija Ratels FC (NWFL Premiership) edged Generation Next FA 1–0, with Miracle Eigbe scoring the decisive goal early in the encounter. Players noted the sandy surface offered a fun challenge compared to traditional grass pitches. This showcase forms part of concerted efforts to launch the first Women’s Beach Soccer League in Nigeria, establish a national women’s team, and align with the global movement towards a FIFA Women’s Beach Soccer World Cup.

The league also celebrated standout individual performances:

  • Highest Goal Scorer: Frank Dozie (Kada BSC) – 14 goals
  • Best Goalkeeper: Segun Basorun (Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors)
  • Rising Star: Uwana Aniete (Ibom BSC)
  • Most Valuable Player: Stanley Ekwo (Anambra Beach Soccer Warriors)
