Red United, named for Manchester United, squared off against City Blue, signifying Manchester City, in a pair of matches to conclude the ITV Fever Pitch this past weekend
Manchester is a city of Red and Blue, in honour of the two English Premier League club giants, and in addition to the month long excitement that took place at the ITV Fever Pitch, the concluding all-star matches ceremoniously saw the city´s biggest rivalry fleshed out on the sand. The two game series took place on the 12th and 13th of July with a mixture of illustrious beach soccer players from all over the world. Both sides were sprinkled with homegrown British talent and far-famed players from the corners of the globe. The iconic Madjer captained the Reds while the World Cup Champion François led the Blues. The two matches coincided with the FIFA World Cup Brazil 2014 as fans watched the finals on the big screen after being treated to some amazing beach soccer.
City Blue kicked off the weekend with an 8-4 win over Red United, using a slew of early goals. City Blue found themselves playing keep away after the first few minutes of rapid scoring. Facing an early three goal deficit, Madjer took it upon himself to lead Red United back, but after his lone goal, Temple, of England, scored for the Blues to give them a 4-1 lead at the first break. The second period saw just as many wonderful goals, this time three for the leading City Blue, and two from the Reds. Staring at a five goal difference late in the match, Madjer scored again to give his team some hope but the comeback stopped there as City Blue triumphed 8-4 over Red United.
Penalties were the only thing that could crown City Blue the victor in the second match after a 5-5 draw through 36 minutes of play and an extra three minutes of overtime. The final score ended up being Red United 5(1)-5(3) City Blue. This match was just as compelling as the first and even more contested. City Blue started much quicker than the Reds once again, owning a 3-0 lead midway through second period but Red United responded with three quick goals, in just over one minute, spanning from the end of the middle frame into the final period. The two teams exchanged goals and a goal from England star, Clarke, put the Reds up by 5-4, which is how the score remained until the final 30 seconds. With less than 30 seconds, the French hero, François, netted the equalizer, sending the match to overtime. The extra frame went scoreless and the match headed to the penalty shoot-out, with the Blues coming out on top.
